August 7, 2012.  - Zharay District, Kandahar Province, Afghanistan -  TEDD handler SPC. Alexander Reimer, of the 4th Brigade Combat Team, 82nd Airborne Division, and his dog Howard pause for a moment during a foot patrol in Zharay District, Kandahar Province on Tuesday, August 7, 2012.

The 82nd Airborne Division's 4th Brigade Combat Team has employed a unique tactic against the increasing improvised explosive device threat in Afghanistan, Tactical Explosive Detection Dogs. The TEDD teams are sent into the field to accompany foot patrols where they are effective in detecting potential IED threats. Unlike traditional Military Working Dog teams, which the Army has used in the past, TEDD teams are unique in that their handlers are regular infantrymen from the brigade who have been given specialized training in working with the dogs. The brigade has trained and deployed 18 TEDD dogs and handlers during their current deployment in Afghanistan.(Credit Image: © Andrew A. Nelles/ZUMA Press)

I thought the military banned pit bulls. It is great to see a pit in action helping our military. A throwback to "Stubby", WW1 action hero dog. These misunderstood dogs are awesome, atheletic, and well suited for military work. Keep it up!

Thank you for posting such an amazing article. I have shared it far and wide.

I am a bit of a history geek, I collect War Dog photos, postcards, patches and Memorabilia as well as Military Unit Mascot photos. If any pictures are for sale, I hope to add some to my collection.

I have had a pit bull as my service dog for 7 years. I have long said that they are one of the best dog breeds for working dogs. My dog has not once balked at any of the things I have asked her to do. She has traveled far and wide with me and done some crazy things like ride in hot air balloons and on elephants.

It is true that many Military Installations ban pit bull breeds. That being said, my dog has actually been welcomed on many Military bases. As a Coast Guard family, we move a lot and have yet to be asked to leave.

Pit Bull type dogs ARE banned from military installations as pets sadly, but not as working dogs.

Loved the pictures! Keep up the good work!

Oddly, the breed is banned on many military bases...good enough to serve, but not good enough to be considered family.

Love it great for a pitbull to be helping a country that wants to destroy the breed

They are still banned on any military base. If you live in any military housing you can not own a bully breed. Seems pretty biased that they would use a bully breed to protect soldiers yet not allow them otherwise. These are great dogs that keep getting the raw end of the deal due to bad media press. They are good enough to give their life to protect our country yet not worthy of our country to protect their freedom? What do you think about it?? Protect the breed...punish the deed, not the breed. Ban bad owners not dogs. B.S.L. is racism. Thank you for this coverage!

I wish the military would use more Pit Bulls and remove the bans on bases. They are great dogs and excellent working dogs.
